Goal: Undergraduate Education

Goal: Undergraduate Education

Objective: Actively recruit outstanding students to the Franklin College

  • Support departments in recruiting students into new or undersubscribed majors
  • Partner with CURO (the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities), LSAMP (Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation), and other programs to recruit underrepresented students into STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics) majors
  • Build on Young Dawgs and other pre-college programs to recruit and mentor underrepresented or first generation students
  • Broaden the "talent admit" program for the fine and performing arts

Objective: Ensure smooth and timely progress to degree for all undergraduates

  • Expand, strengthen, and modernize our undergraduate curricula; establish procedures for curating these requirements
  • Develop, refine, and publish policies and procedures that ensure personal and effective advisement of students from orientation through graduation
  • Identify additional opportunities to recognize outstanding advisors
  • Ensure that initial graduation checks can be done for all students before the fourth year

Objective: Expand international experiences for Franklin students

  • Explore opportunities for the creation of dual degrees with international partner institutions
  • Expand study abroad and international exchange opportunities for students in all disciplines
  • Identify opportunities to enhance the study of language and culture
  • Expand undergraduate courses and collaborations with international visiting faculty

Objective: Expand the variety of instructional opportunities

  • Expand Writing Intensive Program course offerings within the college as well as across the institution
  • Facilitate innovative teaching methods such as cohort-based instruction, block scheduling, team teaching, and on-line course delivery
  • Enhance the summer school curriculum
  • Identify opportunities for the creation of five-year joint BA/MA or BS/MS programs that give students a competitive advantage
  • Initiate a seed grant program to support the development of upper-level undergraduate seminars on emerging issues
  • Foster opportunities for undergraduates to engage in minor area studies as well as interdisciplinary coursework and research (e.g. CURO, the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities)
  • Create incentives and support for faculty to deliver more on-line courses

Objective: Ensure that all undergraduates have a capstone experience

  • Establish guidelines in partnership with the Honors Program to assist faculty in identifying and nominating outstanding students for major awards and honors
  • Create opportunities for seniors to share research projects, theses, and capstone experiences (e.g., virtual poster sessions, declamation day, three-minute thesis competitions)
  • Establish departmental and college-level graduation traditions to recognize all graduating seniors and their families
