InfUSion Magazine creates space for multi-cultural students to express themselves

The hustle and bustle of UGA’s Engagement Fair filled the Tate Center and as I moved through the crowd, one of the many tables caught my eye. Someone handed me a glossy magazine whose cover featured a diverse group of people. I was told that in a week the magazine would host a welcome meeting for new volunteers. On a whim I decided to go. When I walked into that meeting, I was met with such a warm and inviting atmosphere that I couldn’t help but be drawn into the Student Organization, InfUSion Magazine.

InfUSion Magazine began in 1989 with the name Kross Kultures Magazine and is a part of Multicultural Services and Programs at UGA. It is UGA’s first multicultural magazine, featuring a variety of content. InfUSion welcomes everyone to participate in the production of the magazine. Each semester writers, graphic designers, photographers and more come together to publish a new edition. Over the years, InfUSion also started its own podcast called, Pop The Fuse, which publishes monthly episodes. Online articles and an advice column are published on InfUSion’s website.

As a multicultural magazine, InfUSion amplifies voices that might otherwise struggle to find a platform. From opinion articles to entertainment to poetry, InfUSion provides a place for students to express their opinions and feelings.

“Infusion impacts the community of UGA by offering a welcoming space for students of all different walks of life,” said Ashtin Barker, current Editor in Chief. “We truly are a multicultural publication, and we strive to serve our underrepresented student audience by telling stories that matter to our writers and readers.” A magazine free to the public, InfUSion’s goal is to connect with its readers through relatable, informative, and entertaining articles.

Being a part of InfUSion has taught Barker valuable life skills and professional skills. “I have become much more confident as a leader and as a creative during my three years with the magazine.” Students can get involved in a variety of different leadership roles that will develop skills to help them in their future careers. “It's also a community of likeminded individuals and just a great place for people to be creative and build each other up” Barker said.

InfUSion’s Fall 2024 edition centers on the theme of motion and features a wide variety of articles. Physical copies of the magazine are available inside the Tate Center by the information desks or at the bus stop outside. No matter where you come from, or who you are, InfUSion welcomes you to be a part of the magazine. InfUSion meets every Thursday evening.
