“Recovering the Life of Phillis Wheatley Peters, ‘A WONDER of the Age Indeed!’,” Vincent Carretta, professor emeritus of English, University of Maryland. This event will be conducted online as a Zoom webinar. Registration is free, open to the public, and available here.

Carretta is the author or editor of more than 10 books, including scholarly editions of the writings of Phillis Wheatley Peters, Olaudah Equiano, Ignatius Sancho, and Ottobah Cugoano. This talk will focus on the revised edition of Carretta's acclaimed biography The Genius of Phillis Wheatley Peters: A Poet and Her Legacies, forthcoming in Spring 2023 from the University of Georgia Press.

Carretta's other books include Equiano, the African: Biography of a Self-Made Man and The Life and Letters of Philip Quaque, the First African Anglican Missionary, coedited with Ty M. Reese.

This event is part of The Genius of Phillis Wheatley Peters: A Poet and Her Legacies, a year-long partnership project by the University of Georgia and Texas Christian University on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the 1773 publication of Wheatley’s Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral. It is also part of the Global Georgia public event series of the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts.
