We regret that we need to cancel this event. Thanks for your understanding.

"Daring to Disappoint in Full Color," Özge Samanci, associate professor, Northwestern University School of Communication.

Samanci is a graphic novelist and media artist. Her autobiographical graphic novel Dare to Disappoint: Growing up in Turkey was published by Farrar Straus Giroux in 2015. The book received international press attention and was positively reviewed in The New York Times, The Guardian, and Slate, along with many other media outlets. Dare to Disappoint has been translated into five languages.

In her presentation, Samanci will explain the creation and production process of Dare to Disappoint. The book explores the impact of politics on a middle-class family in the early 1980s in Turkey and a child’s efforts to give meaning to her life. Samanci recounts her story using inventive comics-collages, weaving together images of the sea, science, friendship, and politics. As a media artist Samanci builds digital interactive art installations and these are extensions of her thinking with the comics medium. Samanci will share her two recent interactive art installations.

This event is co-sponsored by Isiah Lavender III, Sterling Goodman Professor of English, and Isabelle Loring Wallace, associate professor of art history.
