Three UGA students named 2017 NOAA Scholars

Congratulations to University of Georgia undergraduates Elizabeth Ashley, Kevin Cameron and Alexandra Mazurek, who were awarded 2017 Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarships from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:

110 rising juniors from 64 universities in 33 states have been awarded 2017 Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarships. The Educational Partnership Program selected 8 students from 7 Minority Serving Institutions in 7 states and US territories for its 2017 undergraduate scholarship class. This year, NOAA reviewed over 550 applications for these two scholarships. NOAA Undergraduate Scholarship recipients are recognized for high achievement in NOAA-mission related fields, including marine and atmospheric sciences, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, math and many other majors. Students studying in these fields contribute to bolstering STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) competitiveness and building a workforce ready to pursue the careers of tomorrow. 

 Both undergraduate scholarship programs include two years of tuition support and paid summer internships at NOAA facilities throughout the country. During the 10-week paid summer internships, scholars conduct research, resource management or education projects while working with a NOAA mentor. At the end of the summer, scholars present their results to scientists and peers during the annual Science & Education Symposium. Scholars can also apply for funding to present their research at up to two scientific conferences. 

"UGA continues to strengthen its reputation in weather and climate related sciences," said J. Marshall Shepherd UGA Athletic Association Distinguished Professor of Geography and Atmospheric Sciences. "The fact that 3 UGA students received the prestigious Hollings Scholarship affirms that we are attracting the top students."

Great faculty in geography, ecology, biology and computer science are important parts of this attraction, along with a broad range of bountiful research opportunities on campus. Congratulations to these programs as they continue to grow and add to the academic prestige of the university with new distinguished accomplishments.
