Spotlight on the Arts at UGA

Perhaps nothing exemplifies a society's highest ideals and broadest ambitions more than its commitment to the arts. It's a kind of multi-generational, altruistic selfishness, a form of public self-interest, which shows us these are not mutually exclusive. Even the most solitary among us can become part of a concert audience. And when we do, we are expanding the social fabric, covering everyone within eye- or ear-shot with that most coveted assortment of singular experience: sharing in a bit of joy. Arts advocacy itself is community-building, on whatever scale you want to imagine.

At the university, we have twice the opportunity to utilize the arts for community building - we enhance the local one with every performance and exhibition; but we also affect the many far-flung communities to which our students return or venture once their time at UGA is complete. That's one reason why it is so important to build student participation in the arts during their time here, which is itself one reason why UGA will hold the first ever Spotlight on the Arts festival during the first week of November.

The festival includes more than 50 events beginning on Nov. 3 and will be a great opportunity to sample the many offerings from all of the arts units on campus. Have a look at the schedule and plan on being on campus a lot that week.
