Our faculty and the university as a whole kick off the New Year with exemplary honors and awards. A few from the past month:

Andrea Sweigart, assistant professor of genetics, honored with Presidential Early Career Award

UGA marine scientists received a $1.3 million grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to study how microorganisms in the oceans keep the Earth healthy, professor and P.I. Mary Ann Moran and GRA Eminent Scholar Arthur EdisonGlobal Atlanta

Assistant professor of psychology Katie Erlich, was named a "rising star" by the Association for Psychological Science

Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor J. Marshall Shepherd was awarded the Charles Franklin Brooks Award by the American Meteorological Society recognizing his visionary leadership as president and serving as an outstanding ambassador for the Society through outreach in popular and social media

The Georgia Debate Union finished in first place at the US Naval Academy debate tournament. The top finish represents the fourth tournament victory by the Georgia Debate Union in 2016-2017, following wins at Samford University, Liberty University, and the University of Miami.

UGA 10th best value in public colleges according to Kiplinger – ABH, Atlanta Business Chronicle, AJC, AJC

UGA named top research institution in the nation for service to student veterans – ABH

Professor of Plant Biology Katrien Devos elected by peers to the American Association for the Advancement of Science – ABH

Clark Alexander, professor of marine sciences honored for environmental researcher on Georgia coast – ABH
