Franklin College Kudos

The Georgia Debate Union won the recent intercollegiate tournament at Vanderbilt University - details on that, along with a few other honors and accomplishments from the month of October:

Two teams representing the Georgia Debate Union, which organizes and fields competitive policy debate teams at the University of Georgia, emerged victorious at the 2015 Vanderbilt intercollegiate debate tournament held in Nashville, Tennessee. The tournament featured over 50 teams from nearly 20 colleges and universities.

UGA professor honored. James Cobb, the B. Phinizy Spalding Distinguished Professor in History at the University of Georgia, was recently honored with a 2015 Governor’s Award for the Arts and Humanities.

UGA team excels in biology competition, reports the Athens Banner-Herald. The University of Georgia’s iGEM-International Genetically Engineered Machine-team won a gold medal and was runner-up for the best measurement project award at the recent 2015 iGEM Giant Jamboree in Boston.

UGA’s Hannah Morris introduces world to Homo naledi fossils – Nature World News. Morris is a Ph.D student who participated is the anthropological dig that led to the discovery of a new human ancestor

10 new books by established Latino authors – NBC News article mentions The Cruel Country by Judith Ortiz Cofer, Emeritus Regents' and Franklin Professor of English and Creative Writing at UGA, and published by University of Georgia Press

UGA Athletic Association Distinguished Professor of Geography and Atmospheric Sciences Marshall Shepherd joins a roster of distinguished speakers and climate scientists in Washington, D.C. this week at the AAAS-sponsored event, Climate Science, 50 Years Later: Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the First Official Climate-Change Warning to a U.S. President
