With UGA climbing the list of worldwide universities recognized for the number of utlity patents granted in 2015, the University of Georgia Research Foundation is impacting the state and the nation as perhaps never before. The UGA patents issued in 2015 included those covering a potential therapeutic for the gastrointestinal infection Cryptosporidiosis, a candidate antiviral therapeutic for hepatitis B, a wound healing product, engineered bacterial strains that facilitate biofuel production, and novel phosphors that may be used in multiple industrial applications, including the production of enhanced LED lighting.
The complex machinery of federal funding, IP, laboratory facilities, faculty time, graduate assistants and more that is involved in transforming promising research ideas into a public good represents a Herculean effort by teams of experts at every stage.
