Kudos, January 2014

With the New Year arrives awards, acknowledgments and congratulations to UGA faculty, staff, students and alumni for their many accomplishments. A sampling of these starts with this very cool use of the internet on Friday, January 10. The White House hosted a panel discussion on the the 'Polar Vortex' featuring our very own J. Marshall Shepherd and host of other climate and weather luminaries:

Marine sciences professor Samantha Joye was included as a notable in Georgia trends list of Most Influential Georgians

UGA alumna Julie E. Carnes (AB ‘72, JD ‘75), currently U.S. District Court Judge for the Northern District of Georgia, was nominated by President Obama to serve in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals

Brett Clementz, professor of psychology, was awarded $74,000 by the National Institutes of Health to study psychotic symptoms in individuals with bipolar disorder. 

Professor of mathematics Jason Cantarella received $174,000 from the National Science Foundation to develop curricular materials based on educational robotics, gaming and computer vision for a first-year calculus course. The first semester of the course is based on analyzing a ball-throwing robot.
