About this Degree

The program of study leading to the Bachelor of Music degree with a major in music education prepares the student to teach grades K-12 in all areas - general, choral, and instrumental - or to continue study at the graduate level. Although the program is broad in order to meet certification requirements, students may choose a major emphasis of study: choral music education with a concentration in voice, or piano; or instrumental music education with a concentration in piano, band instrument or orchestral instrument. With additional study, the degree may be earned with more than one emphasis.

What you will learn

The program of study leading to the degree Bachelor of Music with a major in Music Education is designed to prepare the student for a career in teaching. It provides a broad base of general studies, applied music, music theory, and music history and literature.

Students earning this degree are prepared to enter careers in such fields as public school teaching, private studio teaching, church music, educational publishing, consulting, or music performance. Students holding this degree are prepared to pursue graduate work in any area of music or education, and in fields that do not require a specific undergraduate degree.
