Art/Art Education - B.F.A.

About this Degree

The primary purpose of the Art Education program is to prepare art teachers at the elementary, middle and high school levels in order to promote the role of the visual arts in learning; to nurture aesthetic understanding, to foster critical thinking abilities, and to develop visual literacy.

Students may also work toward careers with other agencies and institutions such as community centers and art museums. The BFA degree is a prerequisite for initial teacher certification.

What you will learn

The B.F.A. in Art Education requires 126 hours, which is six hours more than the University norm of 120 hours. The student must also be admitted to Teacher Education. A 2.5 GPA must be maintained to remain in the Teacher Education program. No grade below C in major courses will be accepted.

Students are required to take 45 hours in art courses beyond the 18 that are required in Area VI of the core curriculum, including painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, a studio sequence, 12 hours of studio electives at the 3000/4000 level, 6 hours in Art Education, and 9 hours in Art History at the 3000/4000 level. In addition, they must take 18 hours in professional Education including 9 in Student Teaching.

Students majoring in Art Education not only have the same opportunities as any art major, but also have additional opportunities in a wide range of teaching situations. Beginning salaries in Georgia average $34,442 and go beyond $45,000 depending on the county and the amount of supplement provided. The primary positions available are as art teachers at the elementary, middle and secondary levels in both private and public schools. As urban areas are most sought after, it is sometimes easier to find positions in the outlying areas. There are also some positions available in various institutions such as hospitals, day care centers, homes for the elderly, scout groups, camps, art centers, museums and church-related programs.
