Innovation took center stage this month at the 2026 IAI Spotlight, where faculty, students, and research partners gathered to explore how this year’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IAI) seed‑grant recipients are redefining what’s possible with emerging AI technologies. The event blended the energy of a collaborative workshop with the depth of a research symposium, highlighting projects that stretch across emergency medicine, mental health, veterinary pathology, autonomous systems, public policy, agriculture, and more. Speakers emphasized how multidisciplinary teams are using AI not just to advance technical capabilities, but to address challenges that directly affect communities in Georgia and beyond.

Throughout the afternoon, presenters showcased how high‑performance computing, interpretable machine learning, multimodal data, and responsible AI frameworks are reshaping their fields. Leadership from across the university underscored that these seed grants, supporting faculty in 11 schools and colleges, represent a strategic investment in UGA’s future as a hub for AI‑driven discovery. With $276,250 in funding and access to cutting‑edge AI platforms through the NextGenAI consortium, the projects are positioned to attract significant external support and accelerate the university’s impact on real‑world problems.
