About this Degree

The program of study leading to the Bachelor of Music with a major in music therapy prepares the student for a career in the use of music to restore, maintain, or improve mental and/or physical health. Post-graduate employment opportunities include, but are not limited to, rehabilitative environments such as hospitals and special education programs within the framework of the public school system. The curriculum includes a strong emphasis in psychology and the social sciences and multiple opportunities to become involved in the profession through observation and participation in clinical experiences.

What you will learn

The program of study leading to the degree Bachelor of Music with a major in Music Therapy includes a comprehensive study of the field of music with a strong emphasis in psychology and the social sciences. It is structured to provide a foundation in the scientific application of music in rehabilitative environments, and it includes a large field experience component. Students completing the degree are eligible to become Board Certified Music Therapists after completion of an internship and passing the Board Certification Examination.

Students are prepared to enter careers in rehabilitative environments such as hospitals, retardation centers, substance abuse centers, and special education programs within the framework of the public school system. Graduates are also prepared to engage in studio teaching, church music, and other areas of performance.
