About this Degree

Students will gain experience in a variety of different media including: time-based forms, digital video, computer and web-based art, digital photography, robotics, sound, performance, durational installation and computer-operated fabrication.

Students are encouraged to develop a personal style in the area or the materials they specialize in. The B.F.A. candidate should achieve an insight into and an understanding of the nature of the materials they choose to work with. In most areas, students are required to present an exhibition before graduation that demonstrates their achievement in developing a mature and cohesive body of work.

What you will learn

starling_620_300auto_c1_0.jpgStudents are asked to consider historical developments, critical ideas and current practices related to time-based art. The area emphasizes creativity, versatility and poetics over computer-based technical skills. Students will be able to utilize a computer lab for digital imaging, digital video, editing and robotic programming. Along with a CNC fabrication facility, digital media students have access to the haptic sensible technology lab and 3D stereo thermojet lithographic printing in sculpture. The primary media and practices in this area deal with the research and experimentation of technology and time-based forms of art. Students are expected to demonstrate a proficiency in this area and must be able to work comprehensively, translating concept and idea into visual poetic forms.

Art majors enter the profession to pursue both fine art practice and applied art in business as well as in education and graduate study. Students are prepared for work in technical as well as creative areas of art and design. Each specialization offers a variety of employment opportunities in areas ranging from mass communications to the service industries.
