Dr. Margie Paz was the first faculty member hired by the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the Griffin Campus. She teaches MIBO 3500 Introductory Microbiology, MIBO 3510L Introductory Microbiology Laboratory, BIOL 3100 Introductory Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, BIOL 3110L Basic Skills in the Laboratory, CBIO 3400 Cell Biology, and MIBO 3900 Directed Study. She has also been approved to teach MIBO 4110 Plant-Microbe Interactions.
Dr. Paz earned her undergraduate degree and her Master of Science degree in plant breeding from the University of the Philippines. In 1996, she received her Ph.D. degree in genetics from Virginia Tech.
After earning her doctorate degree, Dr. Paz received postdoctoral training in the Soybean Molecular Biology Laboratory at Iowa State University (ISU), where she developed DNA markers to identify soybean plants that are resistant to brown stem rot. She also conducted postdoctoral research on functional genomics in soybeans. From 2001-2005, Dr. Paz held the position of Soybean Transformation Team Leader in the Plant Transformation Facility at ISU, where she established vector and Agrobacterium-mediated transformation systems for soybeans. She has published her research in various scientific journals. In addition to her position as a researcher, she was an instructor in a graduate-level course focused on basic techniques in plant genetic transformation and molecular analysis of transgenic plants. Dr. Paz also worked as a mentor for students in the Program for Women in Science and Engineering at ISU, a summer internship program that allows students to work on a variety of projects involving general aspects of science and engineering.
From 2005 to 2007, Dr. Paz worked at the UGA Center for Food Safety on the UGA Griffin Campus, where she conducted research in microbiology and molecular biology. She joined UGA’s Franklin College of Arts & Sciences in August 2007, when it launched its first undergraduate degree-completion program, the BS in Microbiology, on the Griffin Campus.
