Philip Lee Williams has been director of public information
for the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences since 1997.
Prior to that he was, for five years, senior science writer
in the Office of Public Information, and from 1985-1992 he
was a science writer and unit director in the UGA College
of Agriculture. Williams is a graduate of the University of
Georgia with a degree in journalism and spent 15 years a newspaper
writer and editor before being hired by UGA in 1985.
In addition to his work at UGA, he is the author of 10 published
books, including eight novels and two non-fiction books. He
is a winner of the Townsend Prize for Fiction and was named
Georgia Author of the Year in 1991. His books have been translated
into Swedish, German, French and Japanese. He also won a Finalist's
Award in the New York Film Festival for the documentary production
Eugene Odum: An Ecologist's Life, which he wrote and co-produced.
Williams's latest book is Crossing Wildcat Ridge: A Memoir
of Nature and Healing (University of Georgia Press, 1999).
In addition to his books, he has published poetry, essays
and short stories in numerous journals and magazines. Four
of his poems were included in Georgia Voices, an anthology
of Georgia writers that came out in 2000.
His family has long been associated with UGA. He, his brother,
sister, wife and parents are all University of Georgia graduates.
His son is a recent graduate from UGA, with a degree in history. |
