Scientific Illustration exhibition

The Lamar Dodd School of Art is home to a number of popular majors and programs within the Franklin College, where cross-disciplinary collaboration is not only encouraged but is a fundamental component to student achievement and faculty effectiveness. One of the those is the science and medical illustration area. Chaired by art professor Gene Wright, the program has its 20th annual exhibition this week.

The exhibition features work from the scientific illustration program and the Georgia Health Sciences University graduate program in medical illustration. A reception and awards ceremony will be held Feb. 29 from 6-8:30 p.m. The reception is free; and the public is invited.

A long-running collaboration between UGA and GHSU, the exhibition is an opportunity for undergraduates and graduates in science and medical illustration to present their work demonstrating the educational value of visual aids in learning complex medical and natural scientific material. Six professional medical and scientific illustrators will judge the students’ work on an assortment of criteria including accuracy, technical proficiency and composition.

“Illustration is one of the keys to teaching anatomy and medicine, which cannot be learned without the artwork,” said Gene Wright, professor in the art school and chair of the scientific illustration program. “In this context, our students will play an important role as professionals and so it is crucial for them to have their work exhibited and judged in this competitive setting.”

Wright also serves as senior dean of the Franklin Residential College. Congratulations to all the students and be sure to drop by and check out their work.
