Essay by UGA student Laura Stone published in online magazine of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars

Athens, Ga. – University of Georgia senior Laura Stone, a speech communications major from Waynesboro, was selected by The National Society of Collegiate Scholars to have her essay, “The Threat of Peace,” published in the spring 2008 issue of the honor society’s online literary magazine, The Collegiate Scholar.

The essay, written as part of an assignment in Stone’s rhetoric of social movements class, describes the role of Beatles leader John Lennon in the anti-Vietnam War movement. Stone discusses how Lennon’s song “Give Peace a Chance” influenced the public to challenge the U.S. government’s involvement with the war by spreading a message of peace and hope.

Laura Stone"Having my paper published is truly an honor for me,” said Stone (left). “I am glad that The National Society of Collegiate Scholars found potential in my writing, enough so to share the paper with other members in the organization through its magazine.”

After graduating in December, Stone would like to attend law school to pursue a career in either international law or regulation negotiation.

The Collegiate Scholar, published three times a year, includes poems, essays and short stories written by members of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Founded in 1994 at The George Washington University, the NSCS is an honors organization that recognizes outstanding academic achievements of freshmen and sophomores.
