UGA FRANKLIN COLLEGE 'S PROGRAM FOR ADVISING STUDENTS NAMED
WINNER OF NATIONAL OUTSTANDING TECHNOLOGY AWARD
ATHENS , Ga. - A web-based advising application, developed by members
of the Information Technology staff and the Office of Academic Advising
and Graduation Certification in the University of Georgia 's Franklin
College of Arts and Sciences, has been named winner of a national
Outstanding Advising Technology Award.
The Award was given by the National Academic Advising Association
for SARA (Student Advising and Registration Assistant), which was
developed and has been maintained by Michael Brewer of the Franklin
College and Jason Orrill, now with UGA's Enterprise Information Technology
Services.
The honor will be presented at the Association's annual national
conference in Las Vegas in October.
""One of the best things about this job is the wonderful people
I get to work with," said Brewer. "It has been a pleasure to work
with the staff of the Office of Academic Advising. Their professionalism
and attention to detail have made this award possible."
The award is part of the national group's 2005 National Awards Program
for Academic Advising.
"We
are very proud that NACADA has recognized the collaborative efforts
that Michael Brewer, the other Information Technology staff and the
Office of Academic Advising and Graduation Certification have put into
the development of the SARA System," said Franklin College senior academic
advisor Leigh Holland, who nominated SARA for the award. "Through everyone's
efforts, SARA has been finely tuned to meet the needs of our office
by allowing us to create and maintain the data required for successful
interactions between staff and students, beginning at orientation and
continuing all the way through to graduation."
Orrill designed most of the look of SARA (the graphics and colors),
as well as three subsections of the site. Brewer designed
the main database and programmed a large part of the site's code,
including maintenance programming of Orrill's code since he left
the Franklin IT group several years ago.
"I'm thrilled that Michael Brewer, the SARA application and
the Franklin College Office of Academic Advising and Graduation
Certification have been recognized by NACADA," said Christine
Miller, director of Information Technology for the Franklin College
. "SARA demonstrates how effective collaboration between information
technology professionals and subject matter experts can be."
The SARA application was selected as one of five advising technology
innovations to be honored by this award in nationwide competition
this year. These resources include web sites, online tutorials,
software applications, databases, DVDs and other web-based and
non-web-based innovations that use technology to improve academic
advising.
Nominations were judged on the basis of content, interactivity,
clarity and creativity.
Each year, since 1983, the Association has honored individuals
and institutions making significant contributions to the improvement
of academic advising. The more than 8,000 members of the group
consist of faculty, professional advisors, administrators, counselors
and others in academic student affairs concerned with needs of
students.
